STEALING THE SCORE, a middle-grade mystery/adventure

About STEALING THE SCORE: The World Cup―the biggest sporting event in the world―is coming to town!
When a contest offering up a once-in-a-lifetime chance to attend the World Cup is announced, superfans Ethan, Sasha, and Mateo are all determined to win. To do so, they must embark on a local scavenger hunt for soccer star, El Botín's famous cleats. However, the promotional gimmick takes a turn when the real cleats go missing and chaos is unleashed.
With the approaching World Cup on the line, the kids will have to overcome their own rivalries and come together to not only find their hero's cleats but to save the whole tournament.
With the fun collaborative mystery-solving adventure of James Ponti's City Spies and the soccer excitement of T.Z. Layton's The Academy, STEALING THE SCORE delivers a charming scavenger hunt in the vein of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with delightful friendship and heart.
About the author: Sylvia Liu grew up with books and daydreams in Caracas, Venezuela. Once an environmental attorney, she now spins stories inspired by oceans, kraken, and the intricacies of family and friendship. A note from the author about her inspiration for STEALING THE SCORE: Growing up in Venezuela, watching the World Cup every four years was an incredible community experience: for a month, the city would shut down as everyone watched the games. My dad’s engineering firm showed the games in the office, and at home, anytime a goal was scored, cheers rang out from the open windows of our entire 14-story apartment building. My love of soccer has rekindled in recent years, so I wrote this story with three protagonists to reflect different aspects of the global soccer community: a youth player, an online soccer gamer, and a social media influencer. I set the story in multicultural and Latinx-heavy Miami to reflect the international nature of the game. I believe positioning this story around the upcoming World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in Summer 2026, will capitalize on heightened interest in the sport at that time.
