October, 1938. Germany is poised to take over part of Czechoslovakia and thousands of terrified refugees have fled to Prague. A mix of Jews and political opponents of the Nazis, they will be killed if they do not leave the country.

Doreen Warriner, a British academic studying in Prague, decides she must help. Edward Abel Smith is a non-fiction author, feature writer, documentary maker and podcaster. He is the author of two previous books: a unique biography of the James Bond creator, Ian Fleming’s Inspiration (Pen & Sword History, 2020), and The British Oskar Schindler: The Life and Work of Nicholas Winton (Pen & Sword History, 2023), a biography of one of Britain’s most celebrated humanitarians. A story Abel Smith has been researching for four years about convicted murder Robin Garbutt is being made into a Sky documentary in partnership with Lightbox Entertainment. He is also the co-host and co-creator of the hit podcast Lucy Letby: Was There Ever A Crime with veteran investigative journalist John Sweeney. Abel Smith has written about his books for The Daily Express, The Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday.
