Hans Luiten is the history teacher we all should have had. He knows his subject very well and he knows how to switch on your interest for it. From Saint Adalbert, who met his demise in Poland in 997, and whose remains spread across Europe as relics, to the campaigners he meets in a Hungarian metro station, who speak of the terrible Treaty of Trianon as if it was signed only a week rather than a century ago.
Luiten combines history and his own travel experiences in fascinating stories which reveal not only known but also intangible facets of an eventful part of the world. His work sheds light on the region that gave rise to autocrats like Viktor Orbán and Robert Fico.
