NEARLY BELOVED

WaterBrook | Trade Paperback Original | November 4, 2025
We’re excited to share the next heartfelt novel from Kendra Broekhuis, author of BETWEEN YOU AND US. In NEARLY BELOVED, an unexpected DNA test result alerts a young woman that her father wasn’t who she thought he was—in more ways than one—and sends her on a journey of self-discovery and tentative healing.
On the morning of her father’s funeral, Dylan Turner receives an email that turns her world upside down. The DNA test she ordered as a fun curiosity reveals that the father she worshipped all her life wasn’t really her father after all… and now that he’s gone, she can never ask him if he knew. Devastated, Dylan seeks answers from the parent she knows she’s still related to, but her distant, icy mother leaves her with more questions than certainty. With half of her identity now a giant question mark, Dylan finds herself spiraling, until a clue in an old note from her father points her to an unfamiliar address, and then to an even bigger mystery.
Following her father’s hint, Dylan sets off on a cross-country journey to learn where (and who) she really came from. Along the way, she encounters old friends and old flames, mysterious DNA matches with strangers, and a journalist whose work might hold the key to what really happened between her parents. As Dylan probes further into her family history, she learns that both her mother and father had secrets they never shared with her. Her mother’s cool detachment may actually hide a grief Dylan never knew about, and her rosy memories of the man she knew as her father start to seem as if they don’t reflect what kind of person he truly was. And if she’s not Darren Turner’s daughter, who even is she? If Dylan’s going to understand her own story, she might need to let go of everything she thought she knew for sure.
Told with equal parts humor and tenderness, NEARLY BELOVED follows Dylan as she searches for the truth and learns to be open to surprise and possibility. It’s a heartwarming and delicately told story of finding the answers you need, even if they weren’t the ones you were expecting.
Kendra Broekhuis writes stories that touch on heavy topics with a dose of humor and a lot of love. She is the author of the novels NEARLY BELOVED and BETWEEN YOU AND US (WaterBrook, 2024), as well as the nonfiction book HERE GOES NOTHING: An Introvert’s Reckless Attempt to Love Her Neighbor (Thomas Nelson, 2017). She and her family live in Milwaukee.
