A shell-shocked veteran of WWI, Scotland Yard Inspector lan Rutledge is haunted by horrific wartime memories of having shot a fellow soldier before being buried alive with the man's corpse by an explosion.

As he returns to his duties as a Scotland Yard inspector working to solve murders, Rutledge must live with his guilt, personified by the soldier, Hamish, who lives on as a voice inside his head. Rutledge keeps his trauma secret to avoid the social stigma which accompanied psychological, mental, or emotional issues in the early 20th century. lan Rutledge Arrives at Mysterious Press with A CHRISTMAS WITNESS! A second, full-length novel follows for Winter 2026; there will be two more full-length novels after that.

BOOK 1 – A CHRISTMAS WITNESS – An Inspector Ian Rutlege Novella. (Fall 2025)

Rutledge is single and a brand-new Chief Inspector, so he draws the short straw and is called at holiday time to Kent and the home of a Lord. Having served in the first and second Boer War, and with his lofty position as Lord, he rates attention from a Chief Inspector. He claims he was struck by the hoof of a running horse whose rider never stopped to check on him. In bed with a concussion, he is convinced someone is trying to kill him. Rutledgeʻs investigation leads him through a series of events akin to Christmas Carol-type experience.

BOOK 2 – A DAY OF JUDGEMENT (Winter 2026)

In July of 1921, England is suffering a heatwave and the coast of Northumberland is filled with holiday makers, bird watching and enjoying the beaches. Located across the border from Scotland, pilgrims also come to visit the home of Saints Cuthbert and Aiden — the founders of Christianity in England — located on the island of Lindisfarne, one of the islands off the coast and accessible by a causeway at low tide.

When the murdered body of a local man washes on shore just south of Lindisfarne, the Government and the Church of England are concerned both about protecting the reputation of the Church and the sacred sites that are a destination for hundreds of pilgrims at this time of year. With his ability to move in the highest social and political circles, Rutledge is sent by Scotland Yard to solve this crime and dispel any association with the Church.

Upon arrival, Rutledge finds himself pulled between two coastal fishing villages; scarred and wary after years of coastal bombardment by the German Navy, he must tread with care, given power still wielded by the local militias. Rutledge must also deal with his own demons — including the spectre of Hamish — and his fear of burdening anyone who gets too close to him. Kate Gordon is still living with Melinda Crawford, both of whom have made him promise that he will visit them once this case is solved…
