We noticed in Frankfurt that there are many publishers worldwide who are looking to find books that are not only aiming to reach audiences in their 20s, but also written by authors in their 20s and we are happy that PERSON IN PROGRESS is exactly that book.
After graduating from college, Jemma found that most everyone she talked to was overwhelmed by the major life decisions of their 20s, and as a result, their mental health suffered. Though there is so much research around psychology, no one had really humanized it and put it into terms that could resonate with 20-somethings. So, Jemma started The Psychology of Your 20s to make that science accessible and relatable, narrated as a real person in the know, a sort of friend who is experiencing it herself on a daily basis, and millions of people responded.
In PERSON IN PROGRESS, Jemma builds on the content in her podcast and provides a guide to the confusing and chaotic times of living through our 20s. Mixing vulnerable, personal case studies with research-based insights, Jemma covers what makes our 20s today uniquely stressful, from high-achiever promises to childhood trauma to situationships. Nothing is off the table with Jemma, and she shares how yes, she, too, was so broke that she just ate boxed pasta for a whole month, and yes, she, too, has been ghosted by mediocre men. Through her compassionate and fun approach to mental health, PERSON IN PROGRESS helps readers – and those who live with 20-somethings - learn more about themselves and the world in which they are living. Jemma brings a modern and more accessible version of Meg Jay’s classic The Defining Decade with the voicey twist of Chidera Eggerue’s What a Time to Be Alone. While most of her 1.5 million subscribers are in their 20s, PERSON IN PROGRESS is also for teenagers curious about their upcoming years, millennials reflecting on their past years, and those that love a Gen Z’er.
Jemma Sbeg is a podcast host and mental health advocate based in Sydney, though we are aware the majority of her followers are in the States. Her weekly listenership has grown at least 3 times over since February 2024, and we have been told her engagement rate on social media is 4.3 times higher than other podcast accounts. Around the time we acquired this book, Jemma hired a social media and marketing manager, and is actively growing her footprint on Instagram and Tiktok. The Psychology of Your 20s has recently been acquired by iHeart, the largest broadcaster, who is excited to help promote the book. In addition to her current podcast, The Psychology of Your 20s, she’s working on a podcast for Medibank, Australia’s biggest private healthcare provider, and for the Harvard Business Review, which follows her departure from her 9-5 job that will be released next month.
Sbeg is a 23-year-old mental health advocate whose first-hand experiences with the challenges of being in your twenties and stories about relationships, career, and self-discovery resonate with 20-somethings. She is also on her way to becoming a licensed clinical psychologist; she'll have an advanced degree in clinical neuroscience and psychology by the time we publish.
