GRANDPERE'S GHOST SWAMP
by Rachel M. Marsh

GRANDPERE

Grandpere's ghost won't stop haunting Basil Theriot.

She wouldn't mind if the spirit popped up for helpful reasons, like sharing his secret recipe that might save the family restaurant. Instead, G'pere wants Basil to reconnect with her Cajun roots by exploring the swamp with his old friends: an air boat captain, a shrimper, and a scientist rebuilding Louisiana's fast-disappearing coastline.

The more time Basil spends in the marsh, the more she dreams of becoming a coastal scientist, too—at least for her upcoming school career day. But telling her parents would break their hearts and end their hopes of one day passing down the restaurant to their daughter.

Meanwhile, Basil's ghost-obsessed best friend, Tommy, is jealous that Basil saw her first ghost before he did. Now he only wants to hang out with class prankster Nico—but when a prank goes too far and sends the boys into the swamp alone, Basil's plan to lead a wetlands expedition threatens to reveal the truth about her plans to save the coast, and abandon the restaurant. It's time for Basil to decide what kind of Cajun, Theriot, and best friend she wants to be—even if it isn't who Grandpere, her parents, or Tommy expected.

HarperCollins/Greenwillow will publish in March 2026.

Praise for ROUGAROU MAGIC

“A magically charming debut.” –Kirkus

“Marsh’s debut cleverly weaves folklore with the realism of middle-school drama, along with a sprinkle of humor and magic, to create a quick read that fills a void in most library collections. It will appeal to a wide range of readers, sharing the important message that your best self is your true self—and your roots will ground you wherever you’re planted. Readers will gravitate toward this quirky story of family and friendship. A solid purchase.” –Booklist

”This ultimately heartwarming novel contains lots of self-reflection on Feliciana’s heritage as she grows to embrace it, as well as comic relief from her offbeat new pet. Feliciana’s bully is realistically portrayed, but Feliciana learns to ignore her with the help of new friends. Cajun words, traditions, and foods are peppered throughout the text and lovingly explained. Pair with Cuevas’s Mari and the Curse of El Cocodrilo.” –The Horn Book Review
