THIS IS HOW WE FLY by Anna Meriano

Tagline: A loose retelling of Cinderella, about a high-school graduate who—after getting grounded for the whole summer—joins a local Quidditch league and finds her footing, perfect for fans of Dumplin', Fangirl, and everyone who's read and adored Harry Potter.

About THIS IS HOW WE FLY: Seventeen-year-old vegan feminist Ellen Liu-Rourke doesn’t know if she’s ready for her life to change after graduating high school, but she’s relieved that she has one muggy Houston summer left to spend with her best friends Melissa and Xiumiao before college. Unfortunately, Xiumiao seems to have decided she’s already moved on from all things high school, including Ellen and Melissa. And to make things worse, before summer really even has a chance to start, an argument with her step-mom Connie leads Ellen to a brutal grounding. Determined to save their summer, Ellen and Melissa exploit a physical activity loophole in the grounding and join a sports team. The sport? Muggle quidditch, an all-gender, full-contact game played astride PVC pipe “brooms.” Although she’s never considered herself an athlete, Ellen finds that the fannish, social justice-conscious quidditch players are just her kind of people, and she starts to throw herself into the game. But as the summer goes on, rising tensions in her family and a growing distance from Melissa challenge her place on the team and put her newfound confidence to the test. If Ellen wants to keep the community she’s found, she’s going to have to fight for it.

“Through a conversational first-person voice that firmly grounds the reader in the main character’s inner tumult, Meriano portrays Ellen’s heightened awareness and dedication to social equity and inclusion alongside the timeless sense of unease that comes with new beginnings and major change. Readers will find much to appreciate about Ellen’s fresh, relatable journey to define herself on her own terms.” – Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Meriano’s novel is a layered, skillful work that thoughtfully explores the complicated dynamics of a family in conflict due to divergent views of the world, allowing the protagonist to navigate toxic elements of her home life while finding her own voice with the support of friends, both new and old. The story fortunately does not avoid painful, relevant conversations about art, fandom, and problematic creators while showcasing fans who fully love yet critically engage with art. Ellen is of Mexican and Irish descent in a book richly inclusive of many genders, sexualities, races, and cultures. This clever, subtle reimagining of a beloved fairy tale is both subversive and empowering.” – Kirkus, starred review
