A captivating coming-of-age story about a boy who missed too many chances
Sixteen-year-old Quintin has just been released from a juvenile detention centre when he once again gets himself into trouble. His desperate parents send him to a remote part of Canada, where he must hold his own in a strict religious community. Time seems to have stood still here for several decades, and the affection and guidance that Quintin craves are hard to come by. His loveless host family mainly sees him as free domestic labour, and the farmer he is assigned to help sees it as his duty to get Quintin back on the right track with a firm hand.
Despite the harsh circumstances, Quintin remains open-minded. He enjoys the rugged landscape and forms unexpected friendships: with a toddler, a calf and a homeless Native American man. And then there is Mike, a pastor’s son who he finds to be a kindred spirit. Will his adventure in Canada mark a turning point for the boy who refuses to behave, or will he be traumatised once again?
On Hebban, the most active readers’ website in the Netherlands, Hitchhiking to Heaven received an average of 4,25 stars from 3679 voters.
