I WILL KILL YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND FOR $200

To lonely eight-year-old Kay Washington the worst thing in the world is silence. That’s why Eddie Video makes the perfect imaginary friend. He’s smart, rambunctious, and loves pulling pranks. But most important, he’s never ever quiet.
Forty-something, immigrant Ivan is a contract killer with an unusual specialty: imaginary friends who’ve overstayed their welcome. His only rule, no kids—kids need their imaginary friends.
But when one of Eddie Video’s “pranks” goes too far and lands Kay in the hospital, Ivan agrees maybe exceptions can be made. After all, rent is due. But Ivan and Kay will soon learn Eddie Video is no ordinary imaginary friend; he is something much, much darker.
A balance of comedy and catharsis, this dual-narrative tackles both the fear of growing up and the scars our childhood leaves behind.
Robert Brockway is a screenwriter, novelist, comedian, and podcaster. He’s the author of the post-apocalyptic horror epic Carrier Wave (which he self-published in 2020) and The Vicious Circuit, a punk rock urban fantasy series from Tor Books (this includes The Unnoticeables (2015), The Empty Ones (2016), and Kill All Angels (2017)). He was previously Senior Editor and columnist at the hit website Cracked.com, and he co-hosts a popular comedy podcast called 1900HOTDOG.
This is a great new entry in the comedy-horror space, which is lacking in new authors despite the wild success of writers like Grady Hendrix, Jason Pargin, Stephen Graham Jones, and Christopher Moore. Not only will I WILL KILL YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND FOR $200 satisfy readers looking for more comedy-horror, but it will stand out as there’s still such a demand for more books in this space.
Also, the best and most successful recent horror is using the genre to tackle complicated social issues; Brockway brilliantly uses the concept of imaginary friends to highlight social class issues and an entire generation of isolated latchkey kids.
Early praise for I Will Kill Your Imaginary Friend for $200:
“Brockway’s latest alternates between body blows of caustic whimsy and uppercuts of body horror, and you’ll never know which is coming next. Be warned: many children are harmed, so this novel is not for the faint of heart. But then again, neither is childhood.” —Jason Pargin, New York Times bestselling author of John Dies at the End and I’m Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom
“A wild-eyed, psychedelic madhouse of a novel that sucker punches you before you can get away, then sits on your chest and makes you read it. Brockway is one of one. So is this book.” —Jackson Ford, author of The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind and The Bone Raiders
“Funny as balls and creepy as hell. Brockway remixes childhood whimsy with a wonderful dash of menace.” —Django Wexler, author of Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me
“I Will Kill Your Imaginary Friend For $200 is one of those books that shouldn’t work and absolutely couldn’t work well that’s somehow one of the best things you’re going to read this year.” —Peter Clines, New York Times bestselling author of God’s Junk Drawer and The Broken Room
