Las semillas del silencio by Soraya Romero Hernández

First published in 2023, the novel is now in its 6th printing with over 5,000 copies sold — a notable achievement for an independent press like Kailas. We are now submitting it internationally for the first time.

This is the kind of novel that could be ideal for a publisher seeking historical fiction with a strong female protagonist, especially one based on true events.

The author drew inspiration from her great-grandmother’s life: abandoned as a newborn in a home for unwanted children, she went on to endure — and overcome — profound hardship in rural 19th-century Spain. Her story is emblematic of many other forgotten lives from that era. In Madrid alone, over 650,000 so-called “children of sin” were abandoned in the Inclusa, the city’s institution for unwed mothers — one of many tragedies associated with the Catholic Church at the time.

The novel is structured around ten chapters, each told from the perspective of a different woman in Gerónima’s life. These voices together form a poignant and powerful portrait of resilience and womanhood in a deeply patriarchal society.
