MOTHER OF INVENTION by Caeli Wolfson Widger

A present-day Silicon Valley version of THE HANDMAID’S TALE, MOTHER OF INVENTION is a moving and page-turning literary novel showing how not-so-distant future technology may impact the sacrifices women make to balance career and family. MOTHER OF INVENTION will be released by Little A on May 8, 2018, and we’re thrilled to be sharing the early manuscript with you today.

About the Book

Tessa Callahan heads a company developing technology that makes it possible for women to have accelerated pregnancies. They’ve invented a procedure that allows babies to fully develop in nine weeks in a woman’s womb. The technology claims to help women get back on their feet faster after giving birth and is touted as the answer to “having it all.” Things dangerously unravel for Tessa and the other women when she realizes there is a wider conspiracy entrenched in the program.

Mother of Invention is an exploration of the fraught sacrifices women make to succeed in both career and family, including income inequality within marriages, as well as the menace and wonder of technological innovation in a perpetually plugged-in world. But at its core, the novel is a fast-paced story of love, betrayal, and redemption set against the spooky backdrop of a not-so-distant future in which women can “engineer” their lives as never before.

A real-life Tessa herself, Caeli Wolfson Widger lives in Los Angeles, where she works as a headhunter for tech startups. She graduated from Wellesley College and received an MFA from the University of Montana. Her first novel, REAL HAPPY FAMILY, was published by Amazon Publishing in 2014, and received raves in magazines such as People and Glamour as well as the LA Review of Books and Kirkus Reviews. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine.
