FINDING YOURSELF IN THE KITCHEN: Kitchen Meditations and Inspired Recipes from a Mindful Cook
HC • 5.5 x 8.4375 • 272 pgs • September 2015
Nothing is more ordinary than the kitchen, and yet it is the perfect place to explore who we are and what we are capable of. Many books teach the mechanics of cooking and even inspire us to cook; not many dwell on the kitchen's ability to be a place of awakening and joy. This book asks you to seek deeper meaning in this space and explores what cooking can teach about intimacy, failure, curiosity, and beauty.
Each chapter is focused on a cooking theme that explores how to practice mindfulness in the kitchen—and beyond—to discover a more deeply experienced life. It also offers meditation techniques and practical kitchen tips, including approximately 35 of the author’s own favorite recipes. The result is a reading experience that satisfies and nourishes a reader’s stomach and soul.
Dana Velden is a Zen priest who lived and studied for 15 years at the San Francisco Zen Center where she chopped many, many gallons of onions. She has been writing for The Kitchn since 2008 and this book is an extension of her column.
