THE TREASURE OF MARIA MAMOUN by Michelle Chalfoun

(Farrar, Straus and Giroux Children’s/Spring 2016)

Maria Mamoun is book smart and streetwise, growing up with a resourceful single mother in the Bronx, New York. However, after Maria is confronted with increasingly aggressive bullies, her mother decides to uproot their small family and relocate to Martha’s Vineyard, taking a job as a caretaker for the wealthy owner of Ironwall Estate. There, Maria befriends a boy named Paolo, and together they begin exploring the property armed with an old map that Maria is convinced will lead them to pirate’s treasure. It certainly leads them on an unsupervised and risky adventure, teaching Maria that not all treasure is necessarily buried under an X.

Michelle Chalfoun is the author of two adult novels, ROUSTABOUT and THE WIDTH OF THE SEA. She lives in Long Island with her husband and two children, working as a nurse when not writing. This is her middle grade debut, and she is hard at work at her second.
