100 YEAR MIRACLE by Ashley Ream

“Already one of my favorite novels of 2016. Ashley Ream has an absolutely astounding voice—she is one of the most compelling, sharpest writers working today.”—Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestseller

If you were given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to save yourself, wouldn’t you take it? Even if it cost you everything....

Once a century, for only six days, the bay around a small Washington island glows like a water-bound aurora. Dr. Rachel Bell, a scientist studying The 100 Year Miracle and the tiny sea creatures that create it, knows a secret about the phenomenon: the rare green water that inspired the myths and folklore of the native people who worshipped, consumed, and feared it may contain a power that could save Rachel’s own life (and change the world). When Rachel connects with Harry and Tilda, a divorced couple cohabiting once again as Harry enters the last stages of a neurological disease, Harry is pulled into Rachel’s obsession and hope.

The Miracle does things to people. Strange and mysterious things. And as these things begin to happen, Rachel has only six days to uncover and control the Miracle’s secrets before the waters go dark for another hundred years.

This book is the perfect mixture of upmarket fiction, popular science, and suspense, and will be for fans of titles like State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler.

Ashley Ream got her first job writing for newspapers when she was 16. Since then her career has taken her all over the Midwest, Gulf, and West Coasts with more moves than she would care to count. She is now finally and happily settled in Seattle, where she lives with her husband, runs ultramarathons, and is finishing her next book. Her debut novel, Losing Clementine, was short-listed for the Balcones Fiction Prize.

Early Praise for THE 100 YEAR MIRACLE

“The 100 Year Miracle is a rich, enthralling novel, full of great characters, with an unpredictable plot and a fascinating premise...I loved this book from the riveting opening scenes to the darkly powerful ending.”—Kate Christensen, author of The Great Man, winner of the 2008 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction

“A novel of loss, obsession and secrets, The 100 Year Miracle asks how far any of us would go to end our pain—physical, emotional—even if it had devastating repercussions.”—Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, NYT bestselling author of Bittersweet

“Ashley Ream’s new novel reminds us of the magic inherent in scientific exploration. She proves that the sublime act of discovery requires just as much hope and faith as it does preparation and research, whether it’s undertaken in the name of science or love.”—Conor Moran, Director of the Wisconsin Book Festival and former bookseller at Politics & Prose
